You feel that buzzy chatter in the air? The flowers have blossomed, the trees are filled with leaves, and…teenagers are getting prom-posed to. Prom season is right around the corner. One of the most important rights of passage for many high school kids in this country, Prom comes once a year and salons know that it’s a great time to take advantage. Teenagers will start preparing for their big night out and know they’ve got to book their hair, nail, waxing, and lash appointments, soon!

In order to completely understand how to tap into that millennial mentality, you’ve got to first realize their purchasing behaviors. The biggest challenge that businesses need to be made aware of is the shift away from advertising as a stated trusted source of brand advice. U.S. millennials reported that they are most influenced by family, friends and stranger. When asked to name the people who are their strongest influencers, 59% of millennials listed their friends.

That’s right. Friends.

Let’s get through 2 easy ways to boost your bookings through the use of customer referrals!

Customer Referral Program

With customer referral programs, you can encourage your existing customers to refer their friends and spread the word about your business. The more referrals a client gives, the more rewards they can earn. With your younger customers, consider finding them ways to save money through your referral program.

Consider the rewards for each new customer you receive through a referral. Make sure you’re offering some kind of tangible discount or special deal. For every new friend a customer brings in, offer up a free service at a later time or even a discounted product.

Getting More Online Reviews

With greater online reviews come greater sales. 88% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations, it’s important that you’ve got an online presence on the biggest review sites – namely, Yelp, Google, and Facebook.

Encouraging your customers, especially your frequent and happy ones, to leave you online reviews will help to give you greater visibility online, and create legitimate buzz around your business. This holds true for the high school kids when they’re looking for places to book for the big night. Americans spend an estimated 3.5 hours a day on their smartphones, and 90% of that time is on mobile apps. 98% of Yelp users have made a purchase at a business they found directly through Yelp -- Take advantage of the Yelp apps of the world and get your online reviews out there.

So, since it’s prom season and you’re thinking about hitting up all those younger clients, it’s time to start thinking about how to increase your customer referrals, because that’s the best, most effective, method of marketing – especially for this client base!
